Announcing the opening of 193 SHOP

Institute 193 is pleased to announce the January 17th, 2025 opening of 193 SHOP, a hybrid book store and exhibition space in our original location at 193 N Limestone. Continuing the success of our recent holiday shop, INSTITUTE 193 SELLS OUT, the 193 SHOP will feature a mixture of Institute 193’s own publications and merchandise, other books and publications pertaining to 193’s programming, and work by artists and craftspeople around the South.

193 SHOP’s wall space will be preserved to continue a rotating exhibition program, ensuring we can continue to meet the needs of a wide variety of artists and collaborators. Institute 193 will always value the intimacy and experimentation possible in smaller spaces – 193 SHOP’s gallery programming will provide an ideal space for artists exploring new mediums, working on smaller scales, or simply earlier in their careers. 

Featuring books and other publications that relate to and expand upon exhibition programming at our main gallery, 193 SHOP will gradually build inventory by acquiring a selection of new titles relevant to new exhibitions and events in our galleries, deepening and enriching the conversation around our artists’ work. And by continuing to emphasize Institute 193’s interest in the written word, 193 SHOP will strengthen our engagement with the literary arts. Taking our recent collaborations with poet and musician Richard Hell as a jumping off point, we are organizing a series of readings and book signings to take place across both our venues in the coming years – further expanding 193 SHOP’s inventory.
